I'm just curious to see what armies people started with.
I started with Dark Angels which I then repainted to Chaos. Then I bought a fully painted 3000pt Tyranids army. After awhile though I got tired of them and went back to Chaos.

Ultramarines, squad-boxes though... then repainted to Black Templars and finally Space wolves..
I've got models of Orks/Nids/Eldar/Dark Eldar/Necrons/Chaos(Nurgle and Khorne) though
But I only got small point armies. Unlike Warhammer Fantasy.

I started with Craftworld Eldar, built up a 7k force, generally using either Alaitoc, Biel-tann, or vanilla rules albeit creating my own craftworld with fluff and paintscheme/colors. Created a small SM force of around 1k points. Also played as Orks and Tau using two of my friends' armies to prove that you could win as both if you played right. Recently played as Dark Eldar because they're typically forgotten in the greater scheme of things, and have been trying to decide whether to make my 1k SMs more like Black Templars (who I like in fluff) or Raven Guard (whose tactics match mine more), but thanks to GW price increases, that's on hold, and with uni next year my armies will prolly find a nice dusty alcove to call their home.

Second edition had the hover-type rules, correct? And the more interesting, if more complex, rules for vypers taking damage?

For EVERYTHING taking damage. I miss vehicle damage tables. Used to be a dice roll determined which armour value you used and what damage you could do. And pop-up attacks, and Vehicle Reference Cards, and Combat Speed, and...[ /reminisce]

My largest army was practically and Tyranid host. It was 4000pts with everything from termigants to a winged hive tyrant. I loved playing them but my friends would always change up their armies (SM, Eldar and Orks) to use lots of area of effect or long range weapons.
